OFFICIALS AND VOLUNTEERS FOR HOME MEET - NOV 4/12

WE NEED YOU!!!

IF YOU ALREADY RESPONDED PLEASE NOTE YOUR MESSAGE HAS BEEN FORWARDED TO THE APPROPRIATE EXECUTIVE MEMBER.

It takes an amazing number of volunteers to run even a small meet, and the start of the season is a great time to get trained up. More than 30 officials are needed to make a meet session happen! We need eighteen Timekeepers alone as t
hree timers are used per lane per session.

We are offering two Swim Officials’ clinics 10:15-noon on Nov 4, upstairs at the pool. The TIMEKEEPERS COURSE is the place to begin as it explains the overview of how the meet works (certainly takes the mystery out for the novice parent) and provides instruction on the use of a sports stopwatch. Timing at swim meets guarantees the best seat in the house!

Already signed off as a Timer? Then CLERK OF COURSE may be the course for you. This is another important role on deck, ensuring that swimmers, timers and other officials know when and where the swimmers need to be. This is an opportunity to meet coaches and see all the swimmers as they assemble for their races. It is a great place to be!

As soon as possible, please contact Doug Rodgers, our Club's Officials' Chair, by email at dkml.rodgers@sympatico.ca or 613-584-4023 613-584-4023 .

Don't delay! THE KIDS NEED YOUR HELP!

GREAT HARVEST (PUMPKIN) MEET - NOV 4/12

The Candus are hosting the Great Harvest Swim Meet Sunday, 4 November 2012 in Deep River.  This is a great opportunity our new precompetitive swimmers to gain experience, while our seasoned competitive swimmers will be trying to improve their times, and will be challenged by the 800m Freestyle event! We are pleased to welcome swimmers from the Petawawa Predators Swim Club.

As mentioned at our meeting, PARENTS WE NEED YOU!  It takes an amazing number of volunteers to run even a small meet, and the start of the season is a great time to get trained up.  We are offering two Swim Officials’ clinics 10:15-noon on Nov 4, upstairs at the pool.  Three timers are used per lane at a meet, per session.  The TIMERS COURSE is the place to begin as it explains the overview of how the meet works (certainly takes the mystery out for the novice parent) and provides instruction on the use of a sports stopwatch. Out of town officials are welcome to attend these courses.

Would rather help in some other way?  Our Meet Manager Diane Davis (613 584 3033) would love to hear from you. She is looking for help with the Officials’ lunch and distribution of snacks and water.  If you prefer to respond to this email instead we'll forward to the appropriate executive members.

DETAILS: Warm-up starts at 1:00 p.m. with races from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.  Deadline for registration is Sunday, October 28, 11:59pm (this deadline has been extended from the original one) and Candu swimmers can register through their account on our on-line system.  Use the link “swim meet or event sign-up” on the right hand side of the blog at http://deeprivercandus.blogspot.com.  Also on the blog you will find a link to the meet package.  Have a read – it contains very useful information about the meet, as well as a section called “The Fine Print!”  More mysteries solved!

We welcome swimmers and spectators to the pool for The Great Harvest Swim Meet, and especially our I Can Swim swimmers.  Come cheer on the team!

Fast and fun swimming!

Planning for Big Waves!!!

Starting to plan Fall activities?  The CANDU Swim Club has great programs to offer the whole family!  We continue to develop and grow our very popular learn to swim program “I Can Swim” for kids aged 6 to 10 years old.  Our trained coaches teach all aspects of competitive swimming, focusing on the “fun” skill.  We offer a great competitive swim program where athletes are trained, supported and developed by our dynamic coaching staff.   For those looking for something in-between, we have our non-competitive fitness program.  Also, new this year, a pre-competitive program is being introduced.  This replaces I Can Swim Fast and develops all aspects of swimming in a comfortable and challenging environment.  For adults (18 & up) able to swim a minimum of 50m, our club is pleased to support a Masters Program in partnership with the Town of Deep River.

The year is divided into 3 sessions allowing great flexibility:

  • 1 Oct – 22 Dec;
  • 7 Jan – 8 Mar; and
  • 18 Mar – 7 Jun.

Dates and times are as follows:

  • I Can Swim:  Tuesday & Thursday 4:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Pre-competitive:  Monday & Wednesday 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. plus optional Saturday 8:15-9:15 a.m.
  • Competitive:  Monday & Wednesday 6:30-8:00 p.m., Tuesday 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thurs 5:00-6:30 p.m., and/or Saturday 7:25-9:25 a.m.
  • Fitness:  choose any two days from the Competitive schedule
  • Masters:  Monday, Wednesday & Friday 5:30-6:30 p.m. and/or Tuesday 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Want more information?  Come see us at the Deep River Registration Night. On-line registration will begin 2012 September 17.

Small Town Big Waves!

The CANDU Swim Club review of 2011/12

The swimmers:  129 participants in 6 programs – I Can Swim (ICS), ICS Fast, ICS Fast&Far, Fitness, Competitive and Masters.  The competitive team attended 12 away meets and 75% qualified for and swam at the regional level.  The team hosted two local swim meets (The Great Pumpkin and Blackfly) and a Time Trial.  The younger swimmers participated in 3 local mock swim meets, travelled to Ottawa for the fun Candy Cane meet and hosted out of town developing swimmers at our Sundaes on Sunday fun meet.  The team trained for 450 hours in the Deep River pool to make those big waves!

The coaches:  A coaching team of 18 was led by Mitch Blimkie, Chela Breckon and Heather Pentney (nee Keeling). This dedicated trio ensured coaches were trained, planned practises, coached, attended training camps, communicated with parents (~5000 emails between coaches, staff, executive and parents!), attended swim meets and volunteered numerous hours for meetings, special events and fundraisers.  The coaching team develops the swimmers so they can make those big waves!

The executive:  A dedicated group of adults formed a strong executive this year:

-        Janice Breckon – President

-        Lisa Ackman – Vice-President

-        Doug Rodgers – Past President & Officials Chair

-        Chela Breckon – Treasurer & co-head coach

-        Mitch Blimkie – Co-head coach

-        Melinda Boor – Secretary

-        Diane Davis – Meet Manager

-        Johanne Charbonneau and Nicole Adams – Registrars

-        Lynda Lance – Swim-a-thon coordinator

-        Katrina Steele – Fundraising/publicity

The executive met monthly, ensured swimmers were registered, organized and ran the local swim meets and time trials and ensured the swimmers could make those big waves!

The parents:  Each swimmer requires the support of parents/grandparents to get them to practises and meets, encourage their development and celebrate in their achievement.  The team needs parents to volunteer at meets and support fundraising efforts.  A big thank you to the parents for the many ways they enable the swimmers to make big waves!

Stay tuned for details of the CANDU 2012/13 program.  It promises to be exciting and will continue the team motto:  Small Town Big Waves!

BLACKFLY ASSISTANCE! PLEASE READ AND RESPOND

PLEASE RESPOND TO THE DESIGNATED EMAIL ADDRESS OR SIMPLY EMAIL THE CLUB'S GENERAL ACCOUNT (deeprivercandus@gmail.com) AND WE'LL FORWARD TO THE APPROPRIATE PERSON!  MUCH APPRECIATED!

Here are a few things we need assistance on for the upcoming Blackfly - please volunteer/contribute in any way you possibly can.  The Blackfly Swim Meet is a revenue maker (any swim meet is) and is the main reason why our club fees are the lowest in the region (comparing against 22+ swim clubs) for the services we offer.  The majority of  regional clubs have a 'volunteer' contract committing a designated amount of hours from each family but we're asking you to contribute in any way possible.  Thanks in advance.  So far we have three out-of-town teams totalling over 60 swimmers confirmed in addition to our own - let's give them a warm welcome and a reason to return next year!

Fundraiser at Blackfly:
The Candu executive has added a new fundraising event to the Black Fly Swim Meet. It is a Chinese Auction!

A Chinese auction is a raffle with multiple prizes. People purchase tickets and the insert their tickets in the box that corresponds with the prizes they wish to win. They can buy as many tickets as they like. At the conclusion of the auction, one winning ticket is drawn from the "box" beside each item, and the item is given to the owner of that ticket.

The success of the event is greatly increased by the amount and the value of the prizes. We are seeking donations for the prize table. Perhaps you own a business, or are familiar with a business in the community where you could request a donation, or would like to donate a prize. Gift cards, themed gift baskets, sports apparel / memorabilia, oil changes etc. Your assistance in our fundraising activities is greatly appreciated.

Please e-mail Nicole Adams at roknrobbie@msn.com by Thursday May 10, 2012. We appreciate your participation in making our swim meet a success!
Much appreciated!
Nicole Adams
Registrar, Deep River Candu Swim Club
Officials Required (Sat & Sun session)
**Thanks in advance to those who volunteered themselves during online registration** We'll forward this information to the Club's Officials Chair.

Our club's swimmers have trained all year and now it's time to see what they can do! Blackfly is the big event!

It takes more than 30 volunteer officials for us to hold the Blackfly meet and everyone is essential to the meet's success. Did you know that we need 18 Timers per session!?! Training is a quick online course and combined with a short hands-on briefing on how to use a stop watch you are on your way to the best seats in the house!

Already trained as a timer? Then Stroke & Turn is for you. Learn the details of the legal strokes.

Everyone looks good in white! Check out: http://www.osoa.ca/web/
The online course module will also be offerred next Thursday (in person) at the pool from 5-6:30pm.  Please email Doug or the club's general account to sign-up.
